Applying unwavering pressure on international institutions who fail to fulfill their responsibilities towards Aldabra’s pristine biodversity.

UNESCO

For 2 years, UNESCO have been silent about the severe risk to Aldabra Atoll.

In June 2026, we wrote an Open Letter, co-signed by a coalition of organisations, asking UNESCOO to urgently discuss Aldabra Atoll at their World Heritage Committee meeting in Busan, Republic of South Korea. They refused.

UNESCO finally acknowledged the risk to Aldabra in July 2026, in a statement, where they named Friends of Aldabra - but offered no support.

IUCN

In October 2025, Friends of Aldabra filed an urgent motion at the IUCN World Conservation Congress. This motion was contested by conference attendees from the Seychelles Government and construction stakeholders - and subsequently deferred for consideration in 2029 (2 years after the anticipated hotel opening).

“UNESCO and the IUCN stand ready to support the Government of Seychelles and to engage in dialogue with stakeholders to ensure that this development project complies with all conservation and environmental standards and guidelines, thereby safeguarding the Outstanding Universal Value of this World Heritage property.”
— UNESCO

This statement comes after considerable institutional and social media pressure on UNESCO, and in spite of them receiving the Assomption Inquiry Report, outlining that the Seychelles Government deliberately interfered with due process and knowingly endangered World Heritage in order to move construction forward.
